Bryanston Square, Marylebone, W1H

One of the more prestigious and historically interesting residential squares in central London.

Bryanston Square is a long, elegant Georgian/late-Regency garden square in Marylebone, forming part of the historic Portman Estate. Development began around 1810–1811 and was substantially completed by about 1821. It was named after Bryanston in Dorset, associated with the Portman family.

The architecture is particularly attractive: the long sides have formal Classical compositions, with stucco detailing, columns/pilasters and grand central and corner elements. UCL’s Survey of London describes Bryanston and neighbouring Montagu Square as distinctive survivors of the late-Georgian Marylebone townscape.

The garden

The central garden is private, rather than an ordinary public London park. It is maintained by the Bryanston Square Trust for residents, and access is generally restricted to residents/keyholders, although there are occasional public openings.

Bryanston Square Garden has mature London plane trees, lawns, historic paths and an old memorial drinking fountain. The garden dates back to the original development of the square.

A Little Bit of History

Bryanston Square has had some surprisingly important residents and events:

  • Frédéric Chopin gave a recital at No. 46 in 1837.
  • The painter John Everett Millais lived at the George Street corner and painted The Black Brunswicker there.
  • A former Turkish ambassador lived at No. 1, where Queen Victoria was entertained.
  • During WWII the properties were requisitioned by the American Army, and the garden was temporarily used as a vehicle park.
  • General Omar Bradley’s headquarters were at Nos. 14–20 during the war.
  • Parts of the square were badly damaged by bombing, although much of its historic character survived.
